Sossusvlei
In Southern Namibia, about 400km from Windhoek or Swakopmund you will stand amazed at the beauty of Sossusvlei. Situated in the Namib Sand Sea it orginated about 85 million years ago when tectonic shifts caused the Naukluft Mountains to rise out of Gondwanaland, disrupting the salty lakes at its feet. These later dried up to form the salt pans of the Sossusvlei.
Sossusvlei is one of Namibia’s best-known and most photographed destinations and the site of the world’s largest sand dunes, amazing geological fascinations and other scenic attractions.
Etosha National Park
In the arid desert conditions of northern Namibia, an enormous salt pan that is visible from space, dominates the arid Etosha National Park, Namibia’s biggest conservation area. Animals congregate around the park’s multitude of small, life-giving water-holes, making it one of the easiest places to spot an abundance of African wildlife, including huge bull elephants, leopards and giraffe.
Etosha National Park is also home to a thriving population of critically endangered black rhinos, and Namibia’s rhino conservation programme as a whole is considered to be one of the most successful in the world.
Skeleton Coast
Reaching all the way from Swakopmund to the Angolan border, the Skeleton Coast got its ghastly name from the shipwrecks and whale bones that can be found on its desolate shore. The ocean water is freezing, and the dunes are devoid of freshwater sources. However, despite the region’s inhospitable nature, its stark scenery is amongst the most beautiful on Earth. Fly-in safari to the northern Skeleton Coast National Park is a true Namibian highlight. Discover historic shipwrecks preserved in the sand, rare desert-adapted wildlife and vast colonies of baying Cape fur seals. Inland, Himba tribes continue to eke out a living in one of the world’s harshest environments.
